Slippery when wet – how Igor Arrieta crashed, got the wrong road and still managed to win a stage

Rainy day in Basilicata, roads are very slippery.

Giulio Ciccone loses the pink jersey after just one day, in favour of Afonso Eulálio who was second behind Igor Arrieta who won an incredible stage.

After a long ride in the rain, a 2 man breakaway was aiming for the stage but with less than 10 kms to go Arrieta slipped away… Eulálio was now alone.. but he slipped to with 5 kms togo and the two were back together, both very afraid of the slippery road. In order to avoid another fall, Arrieta took the wrong road and Eulálio was alone again, but too tired to win the stage…. So Arrieta won, but Eulálio took the pink jersey

The Contest

Fiorenza Sabatini’s Black Team won the stage. After two stages with 0 points and 2 stages with 10 points, Fiorenza was lonely last and she managed to win the 5th stage. Another couple of teams showed Arrieta in their roadster, but that was not enough. Fiorenza is still last but at least she won a stage.

Almost 20 teams scored 0 today.

Check out for Fiorenza’s Surname “Sabatini”. Once a colleague in another company, Fiorenza told me that her grand-granpa was mr Sabatini a cyclist in whose honor was created the famous “Coppa Sabatini” which is run yearly in autumn and that shows winners in the likes of Moser, Saronni, Argentin, Bugno, Fondriest, Gilber and you name a couple of other riders and they are there.

Koms and the Monkey

Yesterday i introduced the random team “The monkey” who accidentally stole the first position in the mountains to Antonio Sposato and his missing titles.

But Antonio can cheer today witha  mountain stage win, although he shares it with Fiorenza and another old participant of the giro Ed and his Bikey McBikeface. Ed is a long time player and every year he wins at least one stage. Well done also this year

The monkey is leading in the mountains… can you catch up?

Some geography

In my whereabouts… I worked for 3 months in Potenza, the arrival city of today’s stage. At that time, Potenza had one single cinema, that had been showing for the whole period the same movie of the saga “Vacanze di Natale“… too much for anybody.

Moving by public transportation from Potenza was an adventure, but for that small period in my life i did not have a bike with me, but probably that was a good idea since roads seem to be very slippery
